Under-eye area (Tear Trough)

Q) What is the Tear Trough?

A) The tear trough is an abnormality of the under-eye area. They are sometimes colloquially referred to as under-eye bags or under-eye hollows.

Q) What causes a Tear Trough?

A) There are multiple causes of Tear Troughs which occur in combination. These include:

-Ageing

-Weight loss

-Genetics

-Stress

Q) What are the non-surgical treatment options?

A) Most patients with Tear Troughs do not want to undergo surgery (blepharoplasty). The non-surgical approach to Tear Trough typically utilises Dermal filler. In some cases, however, dermal filler in the tear trough area can be ineffective or sometimes exacerbate the condition. Our preferred method for treatment of this area is Protein-Rich plasma or Protein-Rich Fibrinogen. These have been shown to boost collagen and elastin in the under-eye area, improve volume status and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Q) Is it better to do Protein-Rich Plasma or Protein-Rich Fibrinogen?

A) Depending on the degree of volume loss and overall skin health, one may be more suitable than the other. In general, patients with minimal volume loss and dark circles are more suitable for Protein-Rich Plasma and patients with moderate to severe volume loss and dark circles are more suitable for Protein-Rich Fibrinogen in this area.

Q) Does it hurt?

A) In general, treatment is very well tolerated. We use a strong anaesthetics cream which helps to make the treartment as pain-free as possible.

Q) Is there much downtime?

A) It is normal to experience redness (which may look like sunburn) and irritation up to 1 week after the procedure.

Q) How long does it take and how many sessions are needed?

A) Each session may last between 45 to 60 minutes. Though it varies from person to person, typically 3 sessions are needed to achieve the best outcome.
