Under-eye area - FAQ

  • A) The tear trough is a normal anatomical structure of the under-eye area. Many factors can contribute to a prominent tear-trough which are sometimes colloquially referred to as under-eye bags or under-eye hollows.


  • A) There are multiple causes of Tear Troughs which occur in combination. These include:

    -Ageing

    -Weight loss

    -Genetics

    -Stress


  • A) Most patients with Tear Troughs do not want to undergo surgery (blepharoplasty). The non-surgical approach to Tear Trough typically utilises Dermal filler. In some cases, however, dermal filler in the tear trough area can be ineffective or sometimes exacerbate the condition. Our preferred method for treatment of this area is Platelet-Rich plasma or Platelet-Rich Fibrinogen. These have been shown to boost collagen and elastin in the under-eye area, improve volume status and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

  • A) Depending on the degree of volume loss and overall skin health, one may be more suitable than the other. In general, patients with minimal volume loss and dark circles are more suitable for Platelet-Rich Plasma and patients with moderate to severe volume loss and dark circles are more suitable for Platelet-Rich Fibrinogen in this area.


  • A) In general, treatment is very well tolerated. We use a strong anesthetic cream which helps to make the treatment as pain-free as possible.


  • A) It is normal to experience redness (which may look like sunburn) and irritation up to 1 week after the procedure.

  • A) Each session may last between 45 to 60 minutes. Though it varies from person to person, typically 3 sessions are needed to achieve the best outcome.
