Dermal Fillers
Q) What are dermal fillers?
A) Dermal fillers are injectables used for volume replacement, facial contouring and midface lifting. Most dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid based which work by drawing in water and stimulating collagen and elastin synthesis in target areas.
Q) Which is the role of dermal filler in aesthetic medicine?
A) Dermal filler can be used in various areas of the face for various concerns. One of the most common indications of dermal filler is for correction of volume loss. This is most commonly caused by ageing and rapid weight loss and is typically seen in areas like the cheeks, naso-labial folds and marionette lines.
As we age, we lose volume in around the face. What usually follows this is facial descent. Implementation of dermal filler, paricularly in the cheek area, can be useful for the purpose of lifting our midface which can reduce facial descent and slow down facial descent in the future.
Dermal filler is also useful when used to augment bone in certain areas of the face. For example, a robust product can be used around the chin, cheeks, nose or jawline. The effect here can be improved projection, contouring, improved profile and jawline slimming respectively.
Q) What is a Non-surgical Facelift?
A) Non-surgical facelift (or Liquid facelift) is a treatment that utilises dermal filler so as to achieve a subtle midface lift without the need for going under the knife. Usually to achieve a lift, small quantities of long lasting dermal filler are placed in the cheek area. This treatment usually takes less than 20 minutes with minimal downtime.
Q) Can dermal fillers be done without looking unnatural?
A) Yes. When done with modest quantities, dermal filler treatments should always give natural looking results. Unnatural results are typical caused by very high quanitites of dermal filler being done in the same area at multiple intervals.
